August 30: Munich

Last night Nick and I left Chicago to get on the Philadelphia so that we could get to Munich. There was about 1 hour between when the Chicago plane landed in Philly and when the Munich plane left Philly so we didn't have that much time to switch planes. Then the Chicago plane got delayed for 1 hour but it only ended up arriving 30 minutes late. When we landed in Philly we had to haul ass across the airport (between terminals) to get paged to get on the flight to Munich. So basically I was in Philly for about 20 minutes, and the whole time I was running through the airport and didn't get to see anything at all except a bunch of surprised travellers when we asked them to let us go past them on the escalators and whatnot. We did make the plane (and that was probably the 4th time in my life I have been paged at an airport, and it was Nick's first, hahaha) but we were the last people and I bet we were relatively malodorous by this rate. I ended up trying to clean up in an airplane bathroom, and if you know how small those things are, well, trying to take a hobo bath in one at the sink was not the greatest experience ever. However, it did help so I guess that was worth something. However, seeing as we didn't have time to grab dinner, we had some leftover US money, and seeing as I would not really have a need to use it anymore, we spent it on booze on the plane, which also made watching Blades of Glory in VHS a little bit more enjoyable. National City also jipped me really badly by not giving me all my money that I withdrew - I had $1000 withdrawn and they gave me one of those little stacks of money with the little paper band around it, and it turned out that there was only $900 in it, so they can burn in hell. The exchange rate also kind of sucked at the moment, but there is really not that much I can do about that, so yeah.

Anyway, we got to Munich in the morning and they sell fruit in the airport, which makes me happy. I also got 1L of apple juice for about 35 cents, and it was nice juice, not the shitty concentrate stuff. The bathrooms also have two buttons, one to make the toilet flush, and one to mek it stop, so you can control how much flushness you want. We took a 45 minute train ride to the city (the trains are much nicer than the ones in Chicago) and got a cute little hotel across the street from the Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) for €77 including breakfast and our own bathroom and free internet on their crappy Windows98 computer. (For the record I am using the internet cafe across the street because the other connection was horribly slow.)

Munich is nice, there is an interesting mix of old architecture and funky new stuff. That night we went to the city and stuff and went to a 400 soemthing year old beer hall where the old lady that worked there basically asked me what I wanted and then told me I wanted a liter of beer. So I got a liter of beer. In a big stein. Then we got back and every second channel on TV was pornography. Anyway, more to come, I want to go out and do more looking around now. Bye.
