October 18 - Venezia

Woke up when the train conductor guy knocked on my door to bring me breakfast!! It was espresso and a cakey pastry thing. Took the waterbus from Ferrovia (the station) to the hotel at 8am to drop off my bags and hang out in Piazza san Marco until it was time to go back to the station and pick up Cousin Chris! He had been studying Italian cooking in another part of Italy and took the train over for a few days, so that was really cool. We dropped off his bag and then headed down to San Marco on the waterbus.

We went to the Basilica di San Marco, which had this awesome mosaic thingy on the outside of the story of how they stole St. Mark's body and brought it to Italy. We went in and looked around, there is also the Pala D'Oro which was this wall made out of gold behind St. Mark's tomb. We took pictures even though you weren't allowed to and then this angry German lady told us off and told us to get out!! Er... right. I mean, you're allowed to take photos in (most parts of) the Vatican, so I don't know what the big deal was, and in any case she didn't have any right to tell us to leave. Schlempe.

The weather today was kind of shitty, it was raining and surprisingly cold. We took a boat out to Murano which was cold and wet and walked around there for a bit, and then decided to head back to the hotel. My jeans were all wet from the stupid rain anyway, and then once we had settled into the room we headed back out for dinner and more wandering around. Chris had a book which listed a few bars that we wanted to go and hit up, so we went looking for them and wandered around and eventually found them. Venetian streets are a bitch to navigate around; something looks like it should connect and then you find yourself walking on some wooden planks and it's actually a gondola dock or some crap. Anyway, we had some drinks - I had an aperitif thingy which was kind of bitter and tasted like bad jolly ranchers - and then we tried to find our way back and got to Ponte di Rialto eventually for some sleep.
